Diacritics are relatively rare in English, and mainly originate in borrowings from other languages. They are sometimes omitted, especially in informal writing. However, they are conventional in many words (for example, café), universal in others (soupçon), absolutely required to distinguish some (exposé vs. expose), and even natively added to a few (maté, from Spanish mate). Diacritics are also used to indicate metre in poetry (cursèd).
